National parks in India:
A national park is a large area of land which is protected by the government because of its natural beauty, plants, or animals. In India areas secured under Act 35(A) under the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972 are called National Parks.
- National parks protect places of natural beauty. It protects the best of our natural heritage, extraordinary wildlife, and forests. Together with other protected areas they form the basis of our economic and social wellbeing, attract millions of visitors annually, and help to protect unique wildlife by acting as a refuge for threatened species.
- This is an area that is strictly reserved for the betterment of wildlife & biodiversity, and where activities like development, forestry, poaching, hunting, and grazing on cultivation are not permitted. Their boundaries are well marked and circumscribed. They are usually reserves in an area of 100 sq. km. to 500 sq. km.
- In national parks, the emphasis is on the preservation of a single floral or faunal species.
- To date, there are 166 lists of national parks in India that are maintained by the Central Government of India.
- In 1936 India’s first national park “Hailey National Park” was established in Uttarakhand. Now, this park is known as “Jim Corbett National Park”.
- The biggest national park in India is the “Hemis National Park” located in Ladakh.
