Ramsar Site

Ramsar site is a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, also known as “The Convention on Wetlands”, an intergovernmental environmental treaty established in 1971 by UNESCO, which came into force in 1975.

 It provides for national action and international cooperation regarding the conservation of wetlands, and use of their resources.

75 Ramsar Sites in India 2022

75 Ramsar Sites in India in 75th Year of Independence 2022. India adds 11 new wetlands to the list of Ramsar Sites with a total area of 13,26,677 hectares.

The new 11 sites includes :-4 sites in Tamil Nadu,3 in Odisha, 2 in Jammu and Kashmir,and 1 each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra

  • In year 2022, 28 sites have been designated as Ramsar sites. Based on the designation date shown on the Ramsar Certificate, the number is 19 for this year 2022 and 14 for the year 2021.
  • As of Aug 2022, The state of Tamil Nadu has the most Ramsar sites in India i.e 14, followed by the state of Uttar Pradesh with 10 sites.
  • Goa, Karnataka and Mizoram got there First Ramsar Sites, this year.

75 Ramsar Sites in India Declared by/Added on

  • As of 9 December 2021, there were 47 Ramsar wetlands in India.
  • On 2 February 2022, India addstwo more Ramsar sites upscaling the number from 47 to 49.
  • On 26 July 2022, India added 5 more Ramsar sites to its existing list.
  • On 3 August 2022, India added 10 more Ramsar sites to its existing list.
  • On August 13, marking the 75th year of independence, India added 11 more Ramsar wetland sites to its existing list.

Facts about Ramsar Sites in India:

  • There are 75 Ramsar sites in India as on August 2022.
  • The theme of World Wetlands Day (2 February 2022) is “The Role of Wetlands for People and Nature,” emphasising the need for conservation and sustainable use of wetlands for human and environmental health.
  • As of April 2022, there are 2,437 Ramsar sites around the world, protecting 254,691,993 hectares (629,357,620 acres), and 171 national governments are participating.
  • In India the surface-area covered by Ramsar Sites are around 1,083,322 hectares
  • Tamil Nadu has the most Ramsar sites in India i.e 14 site , followed by the state of Uttar Pradesh with 10 sites.
  • Khijadia Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat and Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh were announced as Ramsar sites on 2nd January 2022 and declared on World Wetlands Day (2 February 2022).
  • Sundarbans of West Bengal with 4230 square kilometers is the largest Ramsar Site in India.
  • Renuka Wetland (0.2 sq. km) of Himachal Pradesh is the smallest Ramsar Site in India.
  • Chilika Lakewas designated the first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1981.
