The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest award in cinema given annually for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. This award was given by the Government of India.
- This award named after the “father of Indian Cinema” Dadasaheb Phalke. He made India’s first full-length feature film Raja Harishchandra in 1913.
- It was instituted in 1969.
- The Dadasaheb Phalke Award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) Medalian, a cash prize of Rs.10,00,000 (10 lakh), and a shawl.
- The first recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke award was actress Devika Rani.
- Till now 2021, there have been a total of 51 awardees awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
- Among those, actor Prithviraj Kapoor (1971) and actor Vinod Khanna (2017) is the only posthumous recipients.
- The most recent recipient of the award is actress Asha Parekh(52nd) for the 2020 year in September 2022.
