India is a ‘Union of States’. According to Article 164 of the Indian Constitution, the Chief Minister shall be appointed by the Governor.
At present, there are 30 Chief Ministers in India which includes 28 Chief Ministers from States and 2 from the Union Territories (Delhi and Puducherry).
In India, there are a total of 28 states and 8 Union Territories. The States are headed by Governor. The union territories are directly headed by the Central government. Only three (3) union territories are having administrators. The other Five (5) union territories have lieutenant governors.
In March 2026, President Droupadi Murmu has announced total 9 Governors and Lieutenant Governors across several Indian states and union territories.
